Quinn's story in brief
Quinn calls himself a warrior-poet. He travels for danger, stays for wine and company, and has a compliment ready for whoever is in front of him, governor or barmaid. His talent with a crossbow is described as close to unfair. He keeps one rule, that every person stands alone in the end, since trying to save someone usually leaves two people in trouble.
Nobody knows where he comes from. A mason's symbol on his crossbow has some placing him in a stoneworkers' guild, others take him for a lapsed priest, and he answers none of it. The story then tells of a senator in a distant republic, an idealist who stood between powerful men and their profits and was driven out in disgrace. Soon afterward his villa burned with servants and family inside, and people learned to avoid his name. The name was Quinn. In town he turns up in several other stories. He identifies Marlin's ship, keeps proposing to Helga, and teases Amadeus about Jabel.
