Howard's story in brief

Howard was a guardsman of the Sixth Imperial Cavalry. During the defense of the Imperial Palace against General Cesares he was given the southern wall, which everyone privately agreed could not be held, and his men held it. Every other unit on the wall broke that day. The Imperial bureaucracy did not forgive the comparison, stripped him of his rank and then issued a warrant for his arrest.

In prison his luck was a chef named Gordon, who told him one evening to skip the cookies. Howard ate his anyway, passed out with the rest of the block and woke up outside, rolled in a rug, with Gordon complaining about his sleep-talking. The village that took him in made him chief sentry. In the first rebel attack his men fell back to a crumbling fort with few decent weapons, and Chenko tore a door off its hinges and hammered it into a shield for him. He has been the guardian with the plank shield ever since. Shielded Strike, Shield Block and Joint Defense keep the plank in his kit.
