Edwin's story in brief
Edwin is the quarry foreman. He says almost nothing at work and, once he has had a drink, holds the pub for hours with theories nobody else would say sober. People forgive the strangeness because the stone arrives on schedule. Those who knew him before describe a different man, handsome and easy company, and date the change to what the town carefully calls the accident.
He was foreman of a crew that was trapped underground when a storm shifted the pit's foundations. On the morning it happened he was in bed after a night of drinking while his men walked to the pit under a sky the color of old iron. He tried to reach the shaft and was held back, the voices below called his name until they stopped, and a calm voice afterward promised to handle the report so that the governor would know it was not his fault. He still wakes shouting from the dream. Seth's horror story The Mysterious Case of the Missing Miner pleased every reader Seth knows except Edwin, who called it penny dreadful garbage.
