Amane's story in brief

Amane arrived in the city from far away, caught a fruit stall with her wide sleeves within her first ten steps and apologized to the vendor with a piece of candy. She learns the local language one broken phrase at a time. At home she disappears into old books and sheets of hand-drawn charms, forgets to eat, and leaves a fresh amulet at the door of an old neighbor who has not slept through a night in months. Olive is the one who knows where to find her.

Her people tell of an island where a sacred tree grows at the point on earth closest to the sky, with wood that can call back the dying. Generations of shrine maidens have searched for it, and nobody has found it in hundreds of years. Amane remembers an old deacon closing a dying man's wound with an amulet and looking hollowed out afterward. She offered him her own clumsy first attempt, and he told her an amulet is the best in the world when the heart behind it is sincere.
